Wits take on Sundowns in the Nedbank Cup on Saturday but coach Gavin Hunt's squad has been hit by injuries. Hunt’s first-choice goalkeepers, Ricardo Goss and Brandon Petersen, are both unavailable. Goss is serving an eight-month suspension for an assault on a referee in January, and Peterson is injured.
Former Orlando Pirates keeper Mhlongo has made just one appearance in two seasons at Wits and gets a chance in the Clever Boys’ games in the bio-bubble while 42-year-old while Wits goalkeeper coach Tyron Damons comes out of retirement as another option.
"We've had a few challenges this week, some players tested positive for Covid 19 and just got back. They've had 3 or 4 days training. Macuphu got hijacked, they took his car and everything, Pelembe is not back. Goss suspended, Peterson is out. I might have to play in goal."- Gavin Hunt told SAFM.
"Brighton Mhlongo will play on Saturday, but I've also promoted the MDC goalkeeper who I haven't seen much of. We have also registered goalkeeper coach Tyrone Damons, we have been putting him through his paces in training.
"The new owners came down to meet the players this week. A lot of things were said and cleared. I think they came to an agreement on a few things. I think from now it will be done individually" he added.
