Ajax Cape Town CEO Calls For 18-Team PSL

Ajax Cape Town chief executive officer Ari Efstathiou says he would welcome the expansion of the Absa Premiership from 16 to 18 teams.

The Urban Warriors are on course for a return to the South Africa top-flight following their relegation during the 2017/18 season after topping the GladAfrica Championship log standings before action was suspended.

The PSL featured 18 team from its inception but was reduced to 16 teams in 2002 as a result of overly congested seasons and Efstathiou has called for the return of 2 additional clubs.

"It's an option that needs to be considered, there are obviously cost implications to that." The Ajax CEO told SAFM.

"But I also believe that a country like ours should have always had an 18-team League, not a 16-team League.

"So, maybe this is the right opportunity to go back to an 18-team league, so I think that's a strong option that must be considered by the Board of Governors."

The PSL Board of Governors are expected to hold a meeting on Friday to discuss the way forward regarding the resumption of football while the possibility of the league being null and voided remains.
